UTC Rate Case
For investor-owned water systems we provide services for preparing a rate case to maximize the fair return on your investment. Unfortunately, many investors wait much too long before conducting a rate case. Some even end up subsidizing their customers!
A water system should be regulated by the UTC if the following conditions are met:
- Water systems in which the customers do not have any control over their rates (cannot vote for board members, etc) AND
- The water system has an average bill of over $471 per year OR
- The owner has 100 or more connections total between all the water systems they own.
If a water system meets the above criteria, then their rates must be approved by the Utilities and Transportation Commission. Only legitimate expenses and investments in the water system can be recovered in the rates. By completing the best rate case possible, we ensure that you earn a return on your investment. We can complete a quick analysis to see if conducting a rate case is to your benefit at no cost.
Unfortunately, many view their relationship with the Utilities and Transportation Commission as adversarial. We have developed good relationships with the UTC regulators and understand their rules. What some investors do not realize is that part of the function of the UTC is to not only protect consumers from rates that are too high, but also protect them from rates that are too low and result in the water system becoming financially unviable.
We are here to help you make your water system an asset and not a liability.
